The United way of Peterborough & District is thrilled to announce a matching gift to launch the “Local Love in a Global Crisis” COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund

Wednesday, April 29, 2020 (Peterborough) – Miskin Law, based in Peterborough with offices in Lindsay and Whitby, has generously offered to match the first $10,000 donated to the fund.

Through this matching gift, Miskin Law will double the impact of the first donors to the fund.

“While COVID-19 is a worldwide pandemic, our focus needs to be on helping people close to home. This is why in addition to matching new donations, we encourage other law firms, companies and individuals who are able, to join us and create an even larger matching initiative,” says Murray Miskin, a 1970s Trent Grad, who founded Miskin Law in 1988. Miskin Law has a particular interest in helping people with respiratory problems caused by the corona virus especially because much of its legal work involves compensation for asbestos-related lung cancers.

Donations to UW Peterborough’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund will be invested in local agencies providing services to the elderly, Indigenous populations, people with mental health and addiction issues, the homeless, newcomers and others who are struggling like everyone, but with limited personal resources.

“As the largest non-government funder of social services, we believe that our agency partners are closest to the ground and are keenly aware of the needs and issues emerging in our community.” states Jim Russell, CEO United Way Peterborough & District. “We are working with local social services agencies and local partners to assess the far-reaching impact of COVID-19 in our community.

The fund will support:

Basic needs – access to life’s essentials, such as food

Help for seniors – to support those who are already vulnerable as they are isolated

Capacity for community services – so community partners can continue their vital local work

Mental health support – enabling crisis lines and system navigation services

Last week, nearly 60 community members came together at our Solutions Summit to share ideas, build connections, and help shape the future of Reconciliation, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion (READI) work across Peterborough City & County.

The conversations were thoughtful, honest, and inspiring, and we know there are still more voices to hear.

We’re now inviting the broader community to help inform how up to $300,000 through our new Priority Issues Fund will be invested over the next 18 months.
Whether you attended the Summit or not, we want your insight.

📝 Complete the Priority Issues Fund Survey before Tuesday, May 19 at 10:00 a.m. and help shape this work moving forward.
