Peterborough, ON [January 9, 2026] — United Way Peterborough & District visited Keith Wightman Public School on Friday, January 9th to celebrate its December 50/50 winner, presenting a $1,490 cheque, the largest jackpot awarded through the initiative to date.
The December draw, totaling $2,980 raised, marked a major milestone for United Way’s annual Community Campaign, demonstrating the power of small acts of generosity coming together to create meaningful local impact. The winning ticket was purchased by Kathy Woodcock, a special education resource teacher with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, in support of programs that help individuals and families across Peterborough & District meet basic needs, build stability, and thrive.
Kathy’s win also highlights the strong and longstanding partnership between United Way Peterborough & District and the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, which runs workplace fundraising campaigns across its schools and at the board level each year in support of the United Way Community Campaign.
“This record-breaking draw is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when our community comes together,” said Jim Russell, CEO of United Way Peterborough & District. “Support from workplace campaigns like those a part of Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board plays a vital role in helping us reach people where and when they need it most.”
As of today, United Way Peterborough & District has reached 90% of its ambitious $1.6 million Community Campaign goal, with $1,450,563 raised to date. Funds raised through the campaign support a network of 20 local non-profit agencies working to address poverty, housing instability, food insecurity, mental health, and social inclusion across the region. Campaign dollars also support United Way’s research and internal initiatives, including programs such as Coats for Community and Backpacks for Success.
With the finish line in sight, United Way Peterborough & District is encouraging community members to get involved and help push the campaign across the goal line. There are still many accessible ways to support the Community Campaign, including participating in the monthly 50/50 draws for a chance to win while giving back, purchasing tickets for PTBO Performs VI: Musicians United to End Homelessness, and making individual donations or giving through workplace campaigns.
“Reaching our campaign goal is about more than a number, it’s about ensuring vital supports remain available for people who rely on them,” added Russell “Every ticket purchased, every dollar donated, helps strengthen our communities social safety net.”
