Inaugural Tour de Lion Ride for Fun Health and Community In Support of United Way Declared as Part of Dandelion Day Festival

The United Way of Peterborough and District announced an exciting new partnership with Transition Town Peterborough this morning.  Sunday May 28th marks the 4th annual Dandelion Day Festival to be held at Millennium Park from 11a.m.-4p.m. This annual celebration focuses on healthy lifestyles and the public is invited to enjoy free live music, face painting, children’s activity wall, and a chance to meet local Health Practitioners and local authors.

Ensuring that the day is fun for kids, The Big Dandee was in attendance at the press conference in all his 7 foot dandelion glory, and will be joined by Razberry the Clown who will be entertaining and face painting at the May 28th celebration.

Jim Russell, CEO of United Way Peterborough and District spoke about the alignment of values shared between the two organizations, “we believe in a healthier community for all, and we are so pleased to be partners is this year’s celebration of the noble dandelion,” stated Russell. The festival will have an added event this year called The Dandelion Day “Tour de Lion” Ride for Fun Health and Community, which includes 3 different routes. All proceeds from pledges collected will be donated directly to United Way to help in their work of building strong inclusive communities.

Committee members Craig Niziolek, and Andrea Connell outlined the details of the 3 different rides that will take place all ending up at Millennium Park to partake in the festival celebrations:

  • Wild Rock Avid Cyclist 55k Ride – leaving from the Health and Wellness centre
  • PCNM Trent Trail Family Ride 10k – leaving from Trent Athletic Centre
  • Camp Ponacka All Wheels Mini Ride – leaving from foot of Simcoe St. in Millennium Park

Committee member Dave Sumner shared “The Dandelion Day Festival is important to me because it is a chance to showcase our local complementary health practitioners and work on the prevention of illness. The Tour de Lion encourages citizens to be active and together, Dandelion Day & Tour de Lion helps build a sustainable community.”

It’s hard to believe 2016 was 10 years ago! 🕰️

So much has changed in the last decade and yet, so much has stayed the same. Ten years ago, we were celebrating a major milestone: 75 years of serving Peterborough & County. We were raising funds through fun community events, supporting ongoing initiatives like Backpacks for Success, hitting big team milestones, and making headlines alongside media partners who continue to uplift our work.

Now, as we celebrate 85 years, the most important thing remains the same, we’re still here building community and changing lives for people across the City of Peterborough. 💙
⏳ The countdown is ON!

The holiday season has passed us by, daylight is fleeting, nights are cold, and the weather is chilly. It’s no wonder some of us are feeling low, but it’s important to know you are not alone 🤍
