Coats For Kids 2020 Collection and Distribution

Coats For Kids 2020 Collection and Distribution

We know the need for coats in our community is great. Last year alone, we gave out almost 1,000 coats in Peterborough and in the County.

However, to ensure we are using best practices during the COVID-19 pandemic we consulted our partners and Peterborough Public Health.

Below are the procedures we will be implementing for both the Collection of coats and the Distribution of coats.

Collection:

Saturday October 10 (Thanksgiving Weekend) from 10 am to 3 pm at Vinnies Erskine location

Monday, October 12 (Thanksgiving Day) from 10 am to 1 pm at Vinnies 539 George Street North location

Monday, October 12, from 2 pm to 4 pm at Vinnies Lakefield location (Queen     Street)

UWP staff and volunteers will be provided with face masks, gloves and sanitizer for the collection.

Once collected, the coats will remain in storage for 72 hours and then led by the staff and volunteers from Vinnies Thrift Store will be sorting the coats before they go into storage for a week before the coats are brought back out for distribution.

Distribution:

Sunday, October 25 from 9 am to 2 pm at the Morrow Building, 151 Lansdowne Street, Peterborough.

UWP staff and volunteers will be setting up the coat racks and coats on Saturday, October 24 once the farmers’ market has left the premises.

Signage, indicating the coat sizes and COVID 19 protocols (Physical distancing, hand washing, limit trying on coats) will be put around the building. As well traffic flow will be determined and marked on the floor.

Stations will be set up at the entrance, off the parking lot from Roger Neilson Way and the exit will be at the east end of the building. There will be two sanitizing stations inside where the coat racks are.

For those coming to the October 25 Distribution to get a coat:

Wear a mask.

We will be limiting the number of people inside the Morrow Building coming for coats to 10 at a time.

We strongly encourage attendees to come with the sizes of coats required as we need to limit the touching of the coats.

After more than a decade of dedicated leadership, we are sharing the news that our CEO, Jim Russell, will retire in July 2026.

Since joining United Way Peterborough & District in 2011, Jim has been a steady and passionate force for community change, leading more than $36 million in revenue generation and championing critical work to address poverty, homelessness, and income inequality across our region.

Under Jim’s leadership, United Way Peterborough and District has strengthened its role as a trusted community partner through impactful research, including Housing is Fundamental, multiple Point-in-Time Counts, and The Gap reports on income adequacy and living wages.

Jim’s commitment to Peterborough & District, and to building a more equitable, resilient community, has left a lasting mark. We are deeply grateful for his leadership and look forward to celebrating his legacy over the coming months.

Please join us in congratulating Jim on his incredible contributions to our community!
