75^th Anniversary United Way Campaign Launches

PETERBOROUGH, ON –There was a festive, carnival mood at the Evinrude Centre this morning as United Way Peterborough and District launched its 75^th Community Campaign. Over 250 people were entertained by a 24 piece swing band generously provided by New Horizons. United Way Partner Agencies were on hand and recognized for the years of service they have provided to the community. Some, like YWCA, having been funded for 75 years, while others joined the United Way family over the course of its history.

The slogan Peterborough’s 2016 Community Campaign is 75 Years of Caring. “United Way has always been about community, keeping it strong, drawing on its abundance and heart, ensuring hope for all” stated Jim Russell, CEO.

Peppering the room were images and pictures from the 75 years of work by United Way. Many people could be found chuckling as they reminisced over images of their younger selves.

Len Lifchus, former CEO of United Way, this year’s 75^th anniversary Celebration Chair drew 2 tickets to United Way’s 75^th celebration being hosted at the Armoury on November 19, 2016^,. Len Lifchus and Jim Russell lead the crowd in a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday “while Ringmaster K tantalized with his circus performance art and was one of the highlights of the morning.

An effusive and ebullient Gwyneth James, 2016 Campaign Chair, spoke of the through-line of constancy that United Way has provided over 75 years and of the importance of the work its partner agencies have in making Peterborough a great community. “We can create jobs but what good is that if we have neighbours who are disadvantaged?” Continuing she pointed out “within the United Way family there are agencies who help our neighbours everyday with mental health issues, help seniors stay in their homes, help women escape unsafe relationships, help kids be kids, and help New Canadians.”

Board Chair David Fell echoed this view exclaiming, “United Way continues to play a vital role-one that brings people together, strengthens connections and gives partner agencies the means to carry out their important work.”

Fell and James were joined by all Partner agencies for the reveal of this year’s goal, which is set at $2,000,075.00

Day of Caring = a day to remember! 💙☀️

This past Friday, more than 40 incredible volunteers from workplaces across Peterborough and County came together to support 7 of our amazing partner agencies: Big Brothers Big Sisters, The John Howard Society of the Kawarthas, New Canadians Centre, PARN, YWCA Peterborough Haliburton, Elizabeth Fry Society, and YES Shelter.

What started as a cloudy morning turned into a beautiful sunny day, perfect for gardening, landscaping, lending a hand at a community block party, and making a real difference. In just a few short hours, these dedicated teams accomplished so much. Many hands truly do make light work! 🌱

We`re so grateful to each volunteer and to our valued sponsors who made this day possible:

Today, United Way Peterborough & District is announcing an important leadership transition.

As Jim Russell prepares to retire after nearly 15 years as Chief Executive Officer, we extend our deepest gratitude for his leadership, dedication, and commitment to building a stronger community. Jim`s impact on this organization and the people we serve will be felt for years to come.

At the same time, we are pleased to welcome Jason Seguya as our next Chief Executive Officer, effective July 6, 2026. Jason brings experience leading mission-driven organizations and a strong commitment to collaboration, community engagement, and positive social impact.

Rhonda has been a steady hand, a fierce advocate, a problem solver, and a champion for this community in every sense of the word.

For those of us lucky enough to work alongside her, we’ll miss her wisdom, her humour, the stories of her beloved pets, her unwavering dedication, and her ability to somehow make even the most challenging days feel manageable.

While we’re sad to see her go, we couldn’t be happier to see her step into a role that aligns so perfectly with her passion for building a stronger, more connected community.
