2025 Point-in-Time Visual Unsheltered Enumeration to Take Place On November 20th

On November 20th, United Way Peterborough & District (UWP) will lead the Point-in-Time (PiT) Count in the City and County of Peterborough as part of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada’s Homelessness Policy Directorate. This annual enumeration offers a snapshot of homelessness and informs strategies to prevent and/or reduce homelessness and improve access to safe, appropriate housing. As the Community Entity for Reaching Home in Peterborough, UWP coordinates this effort.

What’s New This Year

As a follow-up to the 2024 PiT survey—where volunteers and outreach staff interviewed unhoused individuals—this year’s count will be a visual observed enumeration only. Trained volunteers and community outreach workers will conduct visual observation of unsheltered areas and encampments to better understand homelessness in our region.

Why It Matters

Data collected through the PiT visual enumeration will inform funding priorities for homelessness prevention initiatives, housing placements, and future investments in housing-related supports when United Way Peterborough issues its next call for Reaching Home funding applications in December.

“No one chooses to be homeless. The Point-in-Time Count is a vital tool to help us understand the realities of homelessness and ensure resources make the greatest impact.”— Jim Russell, CEO, United Way Peterborough & District

While no enumeration can capture every individual experiencing homelessness, and some duplication or omissions may occur, the objective is to produce the most accurate estimate possible using the PiT methodology. This approach reflects best practices outlined by the Government of Canada’s Homelessness Policy Directorate for measuring homelessness, including those in shelters and living unsheltered.

Our community showed up in a big way for Period Promise 2026!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Peterborough & District, this year’s Period Promise campaign collected 41,556 menstrual products, far surpassing our goal of 25,000 products collected.

That’s over 41,000 items that will now be distributed through our friends @kawarthafoodshare , helping ensure individuals and families have access to essential products they shouldn’t have to go without.

Because the reality is: 1 in 4 people in Canada who menstruate have had to choose between period products and other basic needs.

This campaign is about more than products, it’s about dignity, access, and breaking the stigma.

To everyone who donated, hosted drives, and helped spread the word: thank you for being a part of this impact.
