United Way Peterborough & District Announces New Campaign Chair for 2020

NEWS RELEASE

Peterborough, ON August 27, 2020 – United Way Peterborough and District is happy to announce their new Campaign Chair for the upcoming campaign year, Dr. Marcus Harvey.

Marcus Harvey has served on the United Way of Peterborough and District’s Campaign Cabinet since 2017 and joined the Board of Directors last year. He has been very active in the local campaign at Trent University where he is employed as Executive Director of the Trent University Faculty Association. An American historian by training, Marcus has his PhD from the University of Florida and ran the western office of the American Association of University Professors in Berkeley, California, before moving home to Canada.

Marcus has a great deal of experience in the labour movement and – if he has not lost count has been President of 2 unions, a member of 3, and employed by 4. He is currently Vice President of the Peterborough and District Labour Council.

“Marcus has a deep appreciation for the work of United Way and the premium that we put on volunteer leaders in our community. Marcus follows in a long line of Campaign Chairs, marked by their drive, and ambition to serve and succeed” says Jim Russell, CEO of United Way Peterborough and District.

“Most of us lack the understanding, skills, and patience to do the work performed every day by staff and volunteers in United Way Partner Agencies. The rest of us, however, do have what it takes to be kind and generous. My role is simply to remind everyone of that fact” says Marcus.

Asked whether he thought the pandemic would make fundraising more difficult, Marcus was optimistic. “Crises tend to bring out the best in communities; this is probably because adversity is a thing that we all like to beat.”

“We’re moving towards our objective of building the United Way’s capacity, which we’ll be discussing more thoroughly at our Campaign Launch taking place on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. Our Partner Agencies want to build a better Peterborough – we just need to make sure they have all the bricks and mortar they need for the job.”

United Way Peterborough & District is thrilled to have Dr. Harvey as this year’s Campaign Chair and look forward to working with him and the rest of the 2020 Cabinet, currently being assembled. Complete details regarding the campaign launch event will be released in the weeks to come.

Last week, nearly 60 community members came together at our Solutions Summit to share ideas, build connections, and help shape the future of Reconciliation, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion (READI) work across Peterborough City & County.

The conversations were thoughtful, honest, and inspiring, and we know there are still more voices to hear.

We’re now inviting the broader community to help inform how up to $300,000 through our new Priority Issues Fund will be invested over the next 18 months.
Whether you attended the Summit or not, we want your insight.
