Does United Way Peterborough & District operate a food bank?

While United Way Peterborough does not run a food bank directly, we proudly support and collaborate with many local organizations that provide food assistance in our community. If you or someone you know is in need of food support, you can call 211 or visit www.211.ca to find up-to-date information on available services.

The City of Peterborough also maintains a helpful list of local food banks and programs: https://www.peterborough.ca/recreation-culture-social-services/social-services/food-support/

Why should I donate to United Way Peterborough & District?

When you give to United Way Peterborough, you’re investing in a stronger, more hopeful future for our entire community. Your donation supports over 20 local organizations working together to create real, lasting change—from helping families meet basic needs like food and shelter, to empowering youth to graduate and job seekers to find meaningful employment.

Life can be complex, but your support helps build pathways forward. Every dollar creates opportunities, strengthens support systems, and brings hope to those who need it most. Together, we’re moving people from poverty to possibility and building healthy, vibrant communities where everyone can thrive.

Why give through United Way Peterborough & District instead of directly to an agency?

Giving through United Way means you’re part of a collective impact—supporting a network of programs that work together to address the full spectrum of challenges people face. Instead of helping just one cause, you’re helping many, all at once.

Our approach ensures that your donation contributes to a coordinated circle of care, offering both immediate relief and long-term solutions. By supporting United Way, you’re helping build a community where no one is left behind and everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

Who can apply for funding from United Way Peterborough & District?

We welcome applications from local organizations that are committed to building a stronger, more inclusive community. Our funding process is designed to ensure that donor dollars are invested where they can have the greatest impact.

Each application is carefully reviewed through a thoughtful and transparent process. We start by aligning with a shared, evidence-based vision for addressing pressing social issues and strengthening community well-being. Applications are evaluated by a panel of dedicated volunteers and subject-matter experts in areas like finance, organizational leadership, and community development. Their recommendations are reviewed by our Community Impact Committee and finalized by our Board of Directors.

We’re proud to support organizations that are making a real difference in people’s lives.

Do funds raised by United Way Peterborough & District stay in the community?

Your investment goes far, but not far away! Unless directed by the donor to another United Way or registered charity, all donations stay right here in the City and County of Peterborough to help address the key social issues identified by our community.

How much of my donation does UWP use for fundraising and administration costs?

Fundraising costs represent 13% of the total funds raised and administrative overhead is only 7%. This means that 80 cents of every dollar raised is returned to the community. By comparison, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) considers 35% to be an acceptable standard. Every dollar donated and every dollar spent is accounted for in our independently audited financial statements contained in our annual report. Visit https://www.uwpeterborough.ca/reports/ to view our financial statements and annual reports.

In addition to running a workplace campaign, how can I support United Way?

Organizations can become engaged in United Way’s work beyond running a workplace campaign by making a corporate donation; participating in United Way events; seconding or sponsoring an individual to the Sponsored Employee Program; special event sponsorships; Gift-in-Kind donations; and professional service contributions.

🌍 Today is World Social Work Day!

Our community showed up in a big way for Period Promise 2026!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Peterborough & District, this year’s Period Promise campaign collected 41,556 menstrual products, far surpassing our goal of 25,000 products collected.

That’s over 41,000 items that will now be distributed through our friends @kawarthafoodshare , helping ensure individuals and families have access to essential products they shouldn’t have to go without.

Because the reality is: 1 in 4 people in Canada who menstruate have had to choose between period products and other basic needs.

This campaign is about more than products, it’s about dignity, access, and breaking the stigma.

To everyone who donated, hosted drives, and helped spread the word: thank you for being a part of this impact.
