The United Youth Advisory Council
We sat down with each of our members and asked them a few questions about themselves and their involvement with
the United Way’s Youth Advisory Council. Read through their interviews and get to know our members!
Holley Ann Dorrell
Where do you go to school?
I just graduated from Kenner Collegiate, and will be attending Kawartha Lakes Bible College this fall 08/09.
What do you want to be when you "grow up"?
I have always wanted to do something with kids, so I am planning on becoming an Elementary School teacher.
What are your hobbies?
I love to hang out with my friends and family, especially in outside in the warm weather!
I love to relax with a good movie, camping in the summer and visiting relatives.
Why did you want to be a part of the Youth Council?
I wanted to be a part of the youth council because I wanted to give the youth of Peterborough a
voice and a say in what needs to be done in our city. I love the fact that I get to aid in finding
great opportunities for youth to pursue their desires of helping our community.
Plus, I had been looking for a way to help out in the community and strengthen my own personal and social skills.
What is your favorite thing about the council?
Meeting new people, and getting the chance to try something new and beneficial.
What you are looking forward to achieving on the council?
I would love to achieve great insight and accomplish what the council asks of me; us.
I want to help make a difference in this town, community and country.
This youth council is just a mini step towards accomplishing that goal.
Amber Maynard
Where do you go to school?
Kenner Collegiate Vocational Institute
What do you want to be when you "grow up"?
Become a relief worker for a non-governmental organization or work for an
international development/ humanitarian agency.
What are your hobbies?
Photography, Reading, Guitar, Graphic Design, Volunteering.
Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Council?
To become more involved in the community.
What is your favorite thing about the council?
That it is led by enthusiastic youth who get the opportunity to help others.
What are you looking forward to achieving on the council?
To help make a difference and improve the quality of life for people, young and old, in our community
Kathleen McAllister
Where do you go to school?
I am going into grade 12 at St. Peter’s Secondary
What do you want to be when you "grow up"?
I want to be either a Surgeon or Pathologist (hopefully)
What are your hobbies?
Camping, Biking, Volunteering, stuff with friends, wandering the city, etc...
Why did you want to be a part of the Youth Council?
So I could become more involved with the United Way – through a youth orientated group.
What is your favorite thing about the council?
Decision making, planning for fundraisers, and the general opportunities within the United Way that are available.
What are you looking forward to achieving on the council?
Providing Peterborough’s youth with opportunities to become more involved with the spaces and events offered,
as well as helping those in the community who need the services that the United Youth group provides.
Jess McCuaig
Where do you go to school?
Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School
What do you want to be when you "grow up"?
When I'm older I hope to be an art therapist with child soldiers in Africa and then later a
representative for the United Nations Refugee Agency.
What are your hobbies?
In my spare time I read, write, play guitar, knit, silk-screen, garden, and hang out with friends.
Aside from this I volunteer A LOT!
Why did you want to be a part of the Youth Council?
I wanted to be involved in the United Way Youth Council because I feel that youth in Peterborough need
to have their ideas heard and give back to the community. The United Way is an awesome organization to
get youth involved in because they are already highly respected and connected to the Peterborough community.
I've met a lot of really cool and inspiring individuals through my volunteerism and I am happy to know
that I am making a positive impact in other people's lives.
What is your favorite thing about the council?
The United Way has allowed me to network with multiple community agencies and non-profit organizations,
thus expanding my knowledge and my options for future volunteer involvement.
What are you looking forward to achieving on the council?
I am hopeful that the United Way Youth Council will work together to make the community aware of
our presence this year, especially considering the council has just recently been re-established.
Most importantly, I look forward to fostering awareness of social issues in Peterborough and motivating
other youth to get involved too!
Brad Armstrong
Where do you go to school?
Holy Cross Secondary School
What do you want to be when you "grow up"?
My goal is to become a doctor
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include hanging out with friends, practicing karate, playing video games and sports, and catching a good movie
Why did you want to be a part of the Youth Council?
I wanted to be a member so that I could get involved in my community and help others
What is your favorite thing about the council?
I like how everyone is capable and welcomed to contribute to every project
What are you looking forward to achieving on the council?
New friendships and a greater appreciation and knowledge of my community
