Campaign News and Highlights
United Way of Peterborough & District launched its 70th annual campaign and set a goal of $2,588,500. Almost 400 people were in attendance when the announcement was made during the Kick-Off Breakfast at the Evinrude Centre this morning.
The 2011 campaign goal represents a 1.5% increase over last year’s goal and a 4.5% increase over actual funds received through last years’ campaign. “We didn’t reach goal in 2010, so there is more reason to “stretch” over last year,” says Dave Wills, Chair of the 2011 United Way Campaign. “We simply cannot settle for less and lower our target based on last year’s results. This marginal increase also clearly emphasizes our community’s needs through the campaign and gives us all even more incentive to meet and exceed this 2011 financial goal,” he added.
During the Kick Off breakfast this morning, the 2011 Scholfield Award of Community Distinction was presented to the Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival Committee in recognition of their ongoing commitment to raising awareness of breast cancer and raising funds to support cancer care in this community.
Many businesses and individuals contributed to making today’s Campaign Kick-Off happen. The food was donated by Sysco Food Services of Central Ontario, and breakfast was organized under the supervision of Don Vassiliadis and Nikki Nelson of the Shish Kabob Hut with assistance and Peter Poley and the students from Kenner Collegiate. Other contributors included Julie Fallis of Move N Groove Dance Studio, Charlie Toner of Magic 96.7 Radio, the John Howard Society, Evinrude Centre, Keith Monk and Super 8 Motel. The event was emceed by Brian Young of Country 105 and Energy 99.7 FM and Brian Ellis from the WOLF 101.5 and 100.5 KRUZ FM.
David Martin, Chair of United Way Board of Directors emphasized the importance of getting involved. “Making sure your donation has the greatest impact in the most
immediate, efficient and effective way possible is our commitment to each and every donor. Your donation stays here and you have the assurance of low administrative costs, maximizing the impact your dollars have for the people who need it,” he said.
