Agency Description: Assists newly arrived immigrants and refugees to Peterborough and area by providing settlement and integration programs and services. The New Canadians Centre offers settlement counselling, employment services, computer classes, language assessments, and a variety of programs and workshops. In the Host Program, newcomers are matched with local citizens who assist them to adjust to their new life in Canada. Events such as potlucks and dances are open to the whole community in order to foster friendships between newcomers and established community members. Settlement Counselling includes general counselling, community orientation, assistance with arranging interpretation and translation, help filling out forms, and information on government and community services such as schools, health care services, recreational facilities, etc. Employment Counselling facilitates the employment of newcomers in their field of choice by providing current information, professional guidance and a positive, supportive atmosphere. Employment assistance services are also available for foreign-trained professionals who require assistance with credential evaluation and accreditation. The Newcomers Mentorship Program allows foreign-trained professionals the opportunity to receive support and advice from established professionals in their field.
